ABOUT US
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) established the San Francisco Office in Berkeley, California in 2003 as its 9th overseas office.
JSPS is an independent administrative institution under the jurisdiction of Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Originally founded as a non-profit foundation in 1932 through an endowment by Emperor Showa, JSPS has functioned as Japan's core funding agency to promote academic research in all fields including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and medicine.
Our Activities
- Cooperate with Academic Communities
- Build and strengthen a collaborative relationship with research universities in the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada
- Outreach to academic promotion organizations and research universities in Latin American countries
- Coordinate Academic Symposia
- Co-organize academic symposia with research universities in the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada and Latin American countries
- Past Co-organizers: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Stanford University, University of Texas Austin, University of British Columbia, Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University, Yale University, etc.
- Support Japanese Universities
- Support Japanese universities' outreach activities in the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada and Latin American countries
- Support activities of the Japanese University Network Bridging the America (JUNBA) as an administrative office
- Provide Japanese university administrative staff with staff development opportunities
- Support Researchers from Japan
- Assist building networks among researchers and JSPS fellows from Japan in the the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada and Latin American countries by holding networking events
- Promote Fellowship Programs
- Promote JSPS Fellowship Programs for Overseas Researchers to researchers in the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada and Latin American countries
- Issue Newsletters
- Report the activities of JSPS San Francisco and information on research and researchers of Japan
