Research in Japan (Feb 8) 事業説明会を開催しました
With the generous support of UC Davis Office of Global Affairs, over 30 researchers gathered at the conference room, UC Davis International Center to learn about fully-funded fellowships to Japan and make inter-departmental connections.
The session drew a variety of researchers at different career stages from different fields, including graduate students, postdocs and professors in economics, biology, computer science, anthropology, and mathmatics, among others.
JSPS would like to thank JSPS fellowship alumni and UC Davis Assistant Professor Christoph Lossin, Department of Neurology, and UC Davis Professor John Bolander, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, for sharing their experiences researching in Japan. Their talk was a highlight of the session, providing valuable insight through their first-hand experiences.
JSPS also thanks Kazuki Takahashi, JSPS Fellow from Japan, UC Davis Department of Animal Science, Assistant Professor Alex Ming Huang, NAIST-UC DAVIS International Collaborative Laboratory for Medical & Bio Informatics, and Satoshi Hattori, Vice President of the Japanese Universities Network of the Bay Area (JUNBA) and Executive Director at Waseda USA, for their participation in the short networking event following the session. Their participation added depth to the discussion as they were able to share viewpoints about the state of research in Japan and make connections that could lead to international and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
JSPS San Francisco thanks all attendees, and will continue to hold regular fellowship information sessions.

JSPS日本人研究者研究者交流会 2016年度冬を開催しました

JSPS日本人研究者交流会 2016年度冬への多数のご参加、誠にありがとうございました。
本交流会は、米国において活躍されている日本人研究者の方々の分野を越えた交流を促進し、必要な情報を得たり友好を深めていくことを通じて、研究活動をより一層充実させていくことを目的に、年に2度開催しております。交流会には現地でPIとして活躍されている研究者、ポスドク、大学教員、企業研究者など総勢83名方にご参加いただきました。
研究紹介ではJSPSの事業で渡米している3名の若手研究者から発表がありました。また、カリフォルニア大学アーバイン校講師（元広島大学大学院理学研究科教授）の田島 文子先生をお招きし、My journey around the worldをテーマにご自身の研究生活についてお話をいただきました。
その後のグループディスカッションでは、各グループにテーマを選択いただき、参加者の皆様に幅広く議論いただきました。本交流会は研究分野を超えた意見交換、交流、ネットワークづくりの場として活用され、大変有意義な会となりました。
懇親会には今回からの新たな取り組みとして、JSPSの事業を通じて渡日経験のある日本人以外の研究者にも参加いただきました。
次回は、JSPS日本人研究者交流会 2017年度夏を今年の夏にベイエリアで開催予定です。

第17回在米大学職員研究会を開催しました
日時： 2017年1月27日（金） 午前10時～午後5時
場所： NextSpace Berkeley（カリフォルニア州）
第17回在米大学職員研究会へのご参加、誠にありがとうございました。
本研究会は、研修等で米国大学に派遣されている大学職員のスタッフデベロップメントの一環として、2009年から毎年度開催しているものです。
今回は、新たな取組として、アクティブ・ラーニング形式での研修を行ない、アメリカで研修中の日本の大学職員13名が参加しました。特別講師として米田達郎 氏（カリフォルニア州立大学イーストベイ校教授・福岡工業大学理事長補佐）、千綿文 氏（福岡工業大学カリフォルニア事務所所長）をお招きしたほか、JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターからも、中村有希アドバイザー、清水彩子アドバイザーがファシリテーターとして参加しました。また、JSPSワシントン研究連絡センターの春山浩康アドバイザーにも、特別参加としてお越しいただきました。
参加者同士の自己紹介では、「なぜ大学職員を続けているのか？」各自が大学職員として働くことの魅力だと感じている点を紹介しあいました。その後、参加者は２つのグループに別れ、事前に用意してきた課題を書き出した上でグループごとに発表し合い、午後にはそれぞれの課題について参加者全員で議論を深めました。日米の働き方の違い、人事異動や評価の方法、職員として必要とされる専門知識や学習方法、寄付金集め、また、大学への愛校心を育てるにはどうすればよいのか、など様々な課題について、講師を含めた参加者全員が自由に意見を交換しました。参加者個人が米国大学での研修を通じて個別に得た知識に加えて、ファシリテーターによる新たな視点の提供があり、さまざまな考えを共有することができました。日本各地の大学から、多様なキャリアをもつ職員の皆さまにご参加いただき、所属大学や職位の違いを越えて、リラックスした雰囲気の中、活発な議論が行なわれました。
JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターでは、今後も定期的に大学職員研究会を開催する予定です。

The session drew a variety of researchers at different career stages from different fields, including late-term doctoral students, postdocs and professors in economics, civil and environmental engineering, biology, classics, and genetics, among others.
JSPS would like to thank JSPS fellowship alumni and Stanford Professor Gregory Deierlein, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Stanford Assistant Professor Justin Gardner, Department of Psychology, and Stanford Professor Larry Leifer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, for sharing their experiences researching in Japan. Their talk was a highlight of the session, providing valuable insight through their first-hand experiences.

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science offers fully funded fellowships to scholars with excellent records of research achievement for the purpose of conducting collaborative research, discussions, and opinion exchange with counterparts in Japan. The fellowships are intended to help advance the research activities of the fellows while promoting science and internationalization in Japan. JSPS San Francisco offers this session to Stanford Scholars interested in conducting collaborative research in Japan, in order to provide fellowship information and guidance. All fields of research are welcome.

【開催案内】在米大学職員研究会 (1/27)
JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターでは、在米大学職員研究会を下記のとおり開催します。
この会は、研修等で米国大学に派遣されている大学職員の皆様のスタッフデベロップメントの一環として、2009年から毎年度開催している研修プログラムです。当センターが所在するカリフォルニア州は、州のマスタープランに基づき、UC（カリフォルニア大学）、CSU（カリフォルニア州立大学）、CCC（コミュニティカレッジ）という３層にわたる公立高等教育を提供し、その３層をスタンフォード大学を始めとする私立大学が取り巻くという特徴的な高等教育制度で、世界的にも高い研究成果を挙げています。そのような背景を踏まえ、当センターは、Academia Orientedな活動を幅広く展開しており、在米大学職員研究会は大学の国際化を目指した大学職員のスタッフデベロプメントとして実施しています。

【会の趣旨と内容】
大学職員としての在り方・考え方や目指すべき方向性について、他の参加者との構造的な対話や米国における事例紹介等を含むワークショップを通じて、各参加者の「気付き」を引き出し、それを共有することで、参加者全体の自らの能力開発に向けた意欲を引き出す場とすることを目的としています。

AGU Fall Meetingでフェローシップ広報活動を行ないました
日 時： 2016年12月12日（月）～16日（金）
場 所： Moscone North, 730 Howard Street, San Francisco
JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターでは、12月12日～16日にかけて、サンフランシスコ市内で開催された米国地球物理学連合（AGU）秋季大会に参加し、JSPS国際交流事業の広報を行ないました。
AGU秋季大会は、アメリカ国内のみならず世界中から研究者が集まる、世界最大規模の地球物理学国際学会です。会期中を通して、述べ25,000人の参加がありました。対象分野は、陸から海洋、宇宙、環境、災害等、学際的で多岐に渡ります。今回は、昨年に引続き、日本地球惑星科学連合（JpGU）のご協力のもと、JpGUブースの一角にJSPSブースを設けました。
日本での研究活動に関心のある博士学生、ポスドク、教員など、アメリカのみならず様々な国からの研究者約270名がJSPSブースを訪れました。ブースでは、フェローシップ事業をはじめとした国際交流事業について、スタッフが紹介を行いました。

Stanford Symposium “Womenomics, the Workplace, and Women” スタンフォード大学との共催シンポジウムを開催しました
On November 4, JSPS Co-sponsored this year’s Stanford Silicon Valley U.S.-Japan Dialogue on the theme “Womenomics, the Workplace, and Women” held at Stanford University. The symposium was organized by Stanford University’s Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center ₍APARC₎ Japan Program in partnership with the Clayman Institute for Gender Research. The US-Japan Foundation ₍USJF₎ also co-sponsored the event.
The objective of this symposium was to bring up issues which women are facing when it comes to workforce mobility and discuss future efforts to make concrete progress for women’s leadership and participation in Japan.
The symposium featured distinguished speakers from a variety of sectors, including tech, government and education from both Japan and the U.S.
Opening remarks were given by Professor Takeo Hoshi, Director of Shorenstein APARC Japan Program, Stanford University, Mr. David Janes, Director of Foundation Grants, USFJ and Dr. Toru Tamiya, Director of JSPS San Francisco.
Twenty one speakers participated in four panel discussions: “Women in the Silicon Valley Ecosystem- Progress and Challenges,” “Women in the Japanese Economy- Progress and Challenges,” “Women’s Advancement in the Workplace” and “Work- Life Balance and Womenomics”. Professor Machiko Osawa of Japan Women’s University and Professor Nobuko Nagase of Ochanomizu Women’s University presented on employment trends of highly educated women and effects of labor relation on women’s mobility, respectively.

With the generous help of the UC Berkeley Research Development Office, over 30 researchers gathered at the UC Berkeley SkyDeck to learn about fully-funded fellowships to Japan and connect with fellow researchers.
The session drew a variety of researchers at different career stages from different fields, including late-term doctoral students, postdocs and professors in physics, space sciences, computer science, as well as public health, environmental design, and psychology, among many others.
JSPS would like to thank JSPS fellowship alumni John Harte, UC Berkeley Professor, Energy and Resources group, and Saidur Rahman Bakaul, UC Berkeley Postdoctoral Researcher, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, for sharing their experiences researching in Japan. Their talk was a highlight of the session, providing valuable insight through their first-hand experiences.
JSPS also thanks Rai Koh, JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow from Japan, UC Berkeley Department of Physics, and Satoshi Kabasawa, President of the Japanese Universities Network of the Bay Area (JUNBA) and Professor at Osaka University, for their participation in the short networking event following the session.
